Deveron Wildland overlooks the picturesque River Deveron, located on the north side of the Grampian mountains. The land consists of rolling pasture. It also features some newly planted broadleaf woodlands as well as straight-line conifer plantations. Over recent years, the landholding commenced an ambitious nature recovery journey, one that simultaneously seeks to increase community engagement while bringing back lost biodiversity.
Key rewilding commitments:
- MORE NATIVE WOODLAND: Undertake riparian planting of aspen, alder, willow and hazel to increase shade along burns and provide better aquatic habitat. Replace commercial conifer plantations with native broadleaved woodland to boost biodiversity.
- MORE SPACE FOR WATER: Create scrapes and look for opportunities to create other wetland features to increase the amount of standing water on the land – for the benefit of invertebrates, amphibians and wading birds.
- JOINED-UP HABITATS Explore opportunities for more hedgerow creation across the site to increase habitat connectivity.
- RETURN MISSING SPECIES: Undertake enrichment planting of missing (or poorly represented) tree species (such with holly, yew, juniper and aspen).
- CONNECT WITH COMMUNITIES: Seek community volunteer opportunities and wider engagement with youth groups; explore the establishment of way-marked paths across the site for public benefit.
